One of the first questions people ask when they’re considering working with a financial advisor is a completely reasonable one: where does my money actually go?
It’s worth asking. And the answer, at least at Thistle Wealth, is straightforward: your money doesn’t go to me.
The Custodian Model — How It Works
As a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA), I manage your investments, but I never hold them. Your assets are held by an independent third-party custodian. For Thistle Wealth, the current custodian is Charles Schwab.
This is how the RIA model is designed to work. The advisor and the custodian are separate. That separation is deliberate, and it matters.
When you open an account through Thistle Wealth, the account is yours and held in your name at Schwab. I have what’s called discretionary authority, which means I can make investment decisions and place trades on your behalf in accordance with the plan we’ve built together. But I cannot withdraw funds, redirect money, or move assets without your authorization. Schwab sends your statements directly to you. The reporting comes from them, not from me.
That independence is the point. You have a clear, direct line of sight to your money that doesn’t run through this office.
Why Schwab
Thistle Wealth uses Charles Schwab as its custodian because of its stability, security infrastructure, and high-quality client-facing technology. Schwab is one of the largest and most established custodians in the country. As an RIA working with Schwab, I can offer clients access to a broad range of investment options at institutional pricing, without the product limitations or incentive structures associated with larger brokerage firms.
Practically speaking, this means you can log into your Schwab account at any time and see exactly what’s there including your holdings, your transaction history, your account performance. The data you see is Schwab’s data, not a version I’ve prepared for you.
What My Role Actually Is
If your money is at Schwab, what am I doing?
I’m responsible for building your financial plan, managing your investment strategy within that plan, and making sure the two stay coordinated as your life changes. That means deciding how your portfolio is structured, when and how to rebalance, how to sequence withdrawals in retirement to manage taxes, when to adjust your allocation as you get closer to or further into retirement, and how your investments fit with everything else including Social Security timing, pension decisions, healthcare costs, and estate considerations.
The investment management piece is one part of a broader planning relationship. You can read more about how that works on our services page.
As a fee-only fiduciary, my compensation comes directly from clients, not from Schwab, the investments I recommend, or any third party. There are no commissions, no product incentives, no referral fees. The fee structure is transparent and agreed on before we begin. If you’d like to understand more about what the fiduciary standard means and why it matters, this post covers it in detail.
Why Independent Custody Matters
The separation between advisor and custodian is one of the most important protections built into the RIA model and one that most clients don’t know to ask about.
When an advisor controls both the management of assets and the reporting on those assets, there’s no independent check on what they’re telling you. The RIA custodian model eliminates that problem. Schwab verifies everything independently. Your statements come from them. If something ever looked wrong to you, you could call Schwab directly without going through me.
That structure isn’t unique to Thistle Wealth. It’s how the RIA model is supposed to work. But not every firm operates this way, which is why it’s worth understanding before you choose who to work with.
What to Expect Once You’re a Client
When you work with Thistle Wealth, you’ll have two sets of access: your Schwab account, where your assets are held and your statements are generated, and a planning platform where we maintain your financial plan, share documents, and track progress toward your goals.
The Schwab account is yours. You can view it anytime, call their support line directly, and see every transaction as it happens. Nothing about how your money is managed should ever feel opaque. If it does, that’s worth a conversation.
If you have questions about how this works before we talk, I’m glad to answer them. And if you’re ready to explore whether working together makes sense, schedule a conversation here.
